Termites

If you are a property owner in the Martinsburg, West Virginia area it is the Subterranean Termite that you need to look out for. The Subterranean Termite has a red-brown head with a silver body and long black clippers for chewing through the wood it calls its home.

Termites habits are generally called "swarming". They typically swarm in the spring and summer when the weather is nice. They are more prone to swarm right after a rain storm when the soil is at about seventy degrees Fahrenheit. The termite swarmers pair up during their flight, then land and search for a place to begin a family. Their wings break off shortly after landing, and the new king and queen start their colony by excavating a small chamber in a plot of soft soil.

The most damaging termite in West Virginia, the Subterranean Termite, is attracted to wood such as Douglas Fir. Unfortunately, this is a popular wood for building houses presenting a problem for homeowners in the state. They will eat through the wood very quickly. First, they devour all of the softer parts of the wood. They leave the hard parts, so the wood will appear to have a honeycomb shape. These little pests may seem small but the damage they caused in the United States alone last year was astronomically high. Statistically one out of every five homes in high risk areas will be affected by termites at some point in time (Termite Public Services, 2019).
